Before your first visit

What to expect, step by step.

A first appointment with a new therapist can feel like a lot of unknowns. Here's what the day looks like — from the moment your intake paperwork arrives, to the rhythm of weekly care that follows.

01 · Preparation

Settle in before you arrive.

Once you're scheduled, we'll send your intake paperwork through our secure Client Portal. Completing it ahead of time means more of your first session is spent on you — not on forms.

If you'd rather fill out forms in person, plan to arrive 15–20 minutes early so there's time to do them without eating into your appointment.

02 · Arrival

A few minutes early goes a long way.

Your initial session is scheduled for a full 60 minutes — enough time to build rapport and talk through your background. Follow-up appointments typically run 53–55 minutes.

We try to start on time so you get every minute of the hour you came for. Arriving a few minutes early gives you space to settle in before we begin.

Who should attend

  • The client — or the parent(s)/guardian(s), if the client is a minor — should plan to attend.
  • You're welcome to bring another adult for support, though they may be asked to wait in our reception area.
  • Please do not bring small children — we don't have childcare on site.
  • Parents seeking services for a child usually attend the initial appointment alone, without the child present.

03 · The first session

Meet a therapist who listens first.

You'll sit down with a warm, compassionate therapist. Together you'll explore what's bringing you in and identify the kind of care and support that will be most helpful for where you are right now.

By the end of the hour, you and your therapist will have a shared sense of direction — and a plan for what comes next.

  • Talk through your concerns and goals
  • Identify the approach that fits your needs
  • Leave with a clear next step

04 · Continuing care

Build a rhythm that holds.

We recommend booking weekly appointments to start. Momentum matters in the early weeks of therapy, and a steady cadence gives the work room to take root.

Scheduling 6–8 sessions in advance helps you lock in the times that fit your life — preferred slots fill up quickly, especially evenings and the start of the week.
